Pinwheels for Prevention

April is Child Abuse Prevention month. Even though COVID19 has halted most regular activities, Tri-County Family Care Center (TCFCC), wants to acknowledge the annual “Pinwheels For Prevention” campaign, which was started by Prevent Child Abuse America. The pinwheel represents our commitment to ensure happy childhoods and highlights PCA Colorado’s efforts to change the way our state and local government think about prevention. They should focus on community activities and public policies that prioritize prevention, right from the start, to make sure child abuse and neglect never occur.

The pinwheels represent a bright future for our children and our community. We want all children to live in stable, loving, and stimulating environments – at home, in school, and in the community. If you care about children, please assist our agencies to prevent child abuse and neglect, support healthy childhood development, and strengthen families. Look for the blue and silver pinwheels in front of our building, which represent the “Pinwheels For Prevention” campaign. The Week of the Young Child is  April 3 – 8. The purpose of this week is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families, as well as, recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Following are five ways to help prevent child abuse:

  1. Family Resilience: Challenging times impact every family. Recognizing stressful situations and keeping a sense of hope helps them to take constructive action to turn things around.
  2. Parent Development: Taking time to learn about child development teaches them how to set realistic expectations and gives tools to cope with various situations.
  3. Child Development: Helping children develop emotionally helps them identify their feelings, clearly communicate and problem solve, preparing them for positive social interaction.
  4. Network of Family & Friends: Having a support system helps them get needed breaks, cope with difficult times and prevents them from becoming isolated.
  5. Professional Support: Getting to know a childcare professional, teacher, doctor, or family advocate gives them an expert to turn to in times of need.
